Pistons beef up again. Bad news for the Spurs. | ||
|
Detroit traded Darko and Carlos Arroyo, for C Kelvin Cato. An already intimidating front line got another piece of meat, and they were willing to give up two players with potential (Arroyo is a pretty good PG). Clearly, the Pistons know that the title is likely to come through San Antonio, and the Spurs have a power problem at 4 and 5.

Not only did the Pistons beef up heading in to this year's playoff run, but the move also helps them from a salary cap perspective. On top of all of that, they acquired a conditional 1st rounder. Despite the promise shown by Dwight Howard, the Magic aren't going to be good any time soon. I haven't seen the details of the conditional pick, but I'd be surprised if it winds up being anything worse than #18, which will probably come in handy for the Pistons a few years down the road.

Tim Thomas | ||

This week's Spurs rumors involve underachieving (er,lazy) Tim Thomas. Here is a recent profile of his work ethic or lack of. Imagine how good Tim Thomas could be if he had a decent work ethic www.sportingnews.com/your...hp?t=39935 Would Pop take a chance at a guy like this, who has all-world "po"---physical talent, a nice 3, ability to play multiple positions, etc.--- but major lazy bones? |

Well Reggie Evans is taken...
ESPN.com: Quote: Great. I think he would have been a good fit with the Spurs, especially since he slammed on us so bad in the playoffs last year... |

Evans and Patterson give the Nuggets another two physical players (thugs, even) in a lineup that was pretty thuggish to begin with. They could pose some trouble for the Spurs in the playoffs.
Fortunately, the screwy playoff seeding will probably prevent a matchup between Denver (#3?) and San Antonio (#1 or 4). |

Quote: I think the Spurs can stand to take a chance on a guy like Tim, assuming he would take a minimum salary for the rest of the season. We need some athleticism on the wing and SA might be the place where Tim can finally develop some good habits without a ton of pressure and/or baggage. |

Quote: When I saw it reported recently that J.R. Smith was in Byron Scott's doghouse, I briefly considered a Brent-J.R. trade. However, the possibility of trading age+uselessness for such youth+potential seemed so remote that it didn't seem worthwhile to post about it. Maybe they can still pull it off over the summer. A Malik Rose-Kurt Thomas trade fell apart at the last minute at the 2004 trading deadline, but the same teams collaborated on the Malik-Nazr trade a year later. Quote:Prior to joining the Spurs, a promising young Stephen Jackson also took up residence in Byron Scott's doghouse. |

Quote:New Orleans will be way under the cap in July. Unless Barry comes up huge in the playoffs, I expect the teams to approach the deal again this summer. |

I would imagine they will be interested in Nazr too with all that cash and not much as far as true centers go.
This summers FA pool is not that impressive either, Nazr will be one of the best big men available. I am sure the Hornets want to save some flexibility for the summer of 2007 too, when there are going to be a lot of big names coming available. Silver and Black Baby ![]() |

Yep, agreed. I was hoping he would pull some game on NOK and boy did he ever. J.R. was equally bad for the Hornets that night. I love Bones and the fact that he is a Suns killer, but he doesn't have the tools to get off the pine against Detroit.
NOK should be freeing up quite a bit of cap space through expiring contracts this Summer, so the chance is there. But I feel that now that teams know Smith is on the block that someone else will give them a much better deal. I would even trade him for the 26-yr-old Macijauskas for the sake of cap space, and you don't lose any shooting touch. That guy is rotting away over there. He has a favorable contract and the Spurs are high on him. If we got both J.R. and Majik that would be unbelievable and would go down as the best trade we have made since Malik-Nazr. Then we could probably resign Nazr or bring over Mahinmi and/or Scola, and see about getting Speedy back. We would have the best PG rotation in the league with TP9-Speedy-Beno! One thing I think would help in the future is sliding Tim over to C. That means we need a starting quality PF (Mahinmi? Maybe in a few years). I went to the great source of all wisdom and tried this (NBA Live 06 Dynasty Mode) and Tim won Finals MVP the next several seasons, hehe! But realistically he doesn't need to bang with bigger bodies than he already does all the time, it would probably shorten his career. |
