If the Spurs are truly shopping for power and athleticism at 5 or 4, they are only doing what is urgently necessary to beat the Pistons. So far, the Spurs offseason pickups have not panned out. Finley is Ron Mercer-esque. Van Exel hasn't done much. Oberto hasn't done much.

Fin looked a lot better than Mercer Wednesday night against the Bucks. Hopefully he continues to hit shots coming off the bench. It was nice to see a Spur hit some FTs down the stretch.

From ESPN:
Quote:I wonder if Evans could be the "athletic big man" referenced in an earlier post? I couldn't stand the guy in last year's playoffs, but his hustle and offensive rebounding would be a welcome addition to the Spurs' interior game. If all parties are willing, I believe Beno's salary would work in an exchange. That would leave the Spurs with two full-time points (Parker, Van Exel) and two part-timers (Barry, Ginobili). |

That would be great for the Spurs. The Spurs are getting beat when they can't rebound and Evans is a nice thug under the boards that can keep the other team off the offensive glass.

Evans is a good thug. His performance in last year's playoffs was scary enough to impress. That's the nastiness the Spurs could use.

More on the Reggie Evans front from the Tacoma News Tribune:
Quote:If they wait 'til this summer, they're going to lose him for nothing in free agency. Why not deal him now for a young player like Beno? |

Re: Trades and Rumors of Trades

I think this should be a major priority for a Spurs team that often struggles to get rebounds against physical teams. Let's face it--the Spurs aren't very tough when it comes to pushing and shoving for rebounds. Evans definitely is. We need something like him to even up things against a team like Detroit, to whom we lost based almost solely on lack of rebounding.

Re: Trades and Rumors of Trades

From Fox Sports:
Quote:If true, this is a surprisingly happy outcome for the Spurs. Even if Artest can fit in with the defensively challenged and pass-oriented Kings, he won't make them a serious threat. Meanwhile, Chokey McStubble will once again fall short in the playoffs. But if he can somehow get the Pacers past the Pistons and into the Finals, all the better for the Spurs. Artest with the Clippers, Warriors, or virtually any other Western Conference team would have been much scarier. If the Spurs didn't have their own significant problems right now (perpetual injuries to Manu and Duncan, lack of athleticism/hustle from the bench), they could breathe a sigh of relief. |

ESPN is now reporting that the deal is off - Ron Ron refused to go to SAC and the Kings have backed out...........

According to some posts at the IndyStar.com Pacers forum, ESPN is reporting that the Peja-Artest deal will be finalized today ... with Ron-Ron's consent.

From ESPN.com:
Quote: This is great news. The Kings still have their major issues before they can be considered a big threat, and Indiana gets marginally better to threaten (however slightly) the Pistons. |

From the AP:
Quote:So the Wolves finally get their first-round picks back, and they trade one of 'em (along with one of their two legitimate scoring options) for Ricky "Tried To Get A Triple-Double On My Own Basket" Davis and Mark "Whoever Signed Me To This Contract Must Have Been Smokin' A" Blount. I can't see this making the Wolves a threat. |

From the AP:
Quote:I wonder if the Spurs even tried to get in on this action. Acquiring Hunter would have helped the team's interior athleticism AND made Nazr totally expendable in trade (assuming Nazr wasn't the one dealt for Hunter in the first place). |

Re: Trades and Rumors of Trades

From the AP:
Quote: I wonder what's wrong with him? He looked OK in the Spurs/Suns playoff series last year. Hunter's making $2.8M this year, and he's under contract through 2009-10 ($3.7M). At $2.3M this year and signed through 2007-08, Oberto's contract would work in a straight-up trade (based on the salary numbers at HoopsHype and the 125% rule). But that would require the Spurs to increase their luxury-tax burden and also take on a longer contract -- all for a player with possible health issues -- so it won't happen. |
